Welcome to Backyard Chickens 101!
This site is a source for people looking to start owning their own chickens as pets. They bring joy to our lives and come highly recommended! Many people value them for their (unfairly maligned) intelligence, constant companionship, personalities, and healthy egg production. They can do the job that many other kinds of pets do and more.
A few warnings before we get started:
- Please look elsewhere for information on professional farming. Our tips will be helpful for raising, but are not applicable to selling edible birds.
- Chickens are delicate: they can die easily and for seemingly no reason, and should not be located where cats, dogs, or prey birds would have access to them.
- Chickens only live indoors for a short portion of their lives. Please refer to the timeline and coop recommendations, links located at the top.
